Spotlight on Minority Languages – Western Frisian

Western Frisian, also known simply as Frisian is spoken in the Dutch province Friesland, in the north of the country.

There are approximately 470,000 speakers of the language.

  • It is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages.
  • Other Frisian languages are Saterland Frisian and North Frisian.

Western Frisian is a West Germanic language.

  • It has be greatly influenced by Dutch, another West Germanic language.
  • It belongs to the Anglo-Frisian subgroup.
  • English and Scots are also in this subgroup.

  1. It’s a wonderful language. I have two “Fun With Frisian” websites for English-speakers who wish to learn Frisian. The University of Groningen’s free online “Introduction To Frisian” course on FutureLearn is simply excellent… hope they continue to offer it for years to come. Cheers.
