Edit 28 January 2026: Inari Sami, Lule Sami, Pite Sami, Skolt Sami and South Sami have been added

Welcome to Opposite Day! Today’s Opposite Day edition featuring beautifully illustrated vocabulary lists in various Nordic languages centered on word pairs! We will pair words like ‘winter’ and ‘summer,’ ‘hot’ and ‘cold,’ or ‘expensive’ and ‘cheap.’ We’ll see how these fundamental opposites are expressed across various Nordic languages. It’s a fantastic and memorable way to learn essential vocabulary in contrasting pairs 😁.

Here’s a sample of what awaits you:

  • Danish: Discovering how ‘vinter‘ (winter) stands opposite ‘sommer‘ (summer), and other essential antonyms.
  • Elfdalian: Learn the difference between ‘stur‘ and ‘litn‘ before your visit to Älvdalen in Sweden.
  • Norwegian: Pairing ‘varm‘ (hot) with ‘kald‘ (cold), alongside other contrasting terms for a fun, easy learning experience.
  • Swedish: Practicing ‘dyr‘ (expensive) next to ‘billig‘ (cheap), making every word a clear and playful contradiction.

I also have more Sami language lists for Opposite Day under construction. They will hopefully be posted later today if the ice storm here does not take out power. If you are in the United States in one of the many areas experiencing some serious winter weather, please be careful and stay home. Studying one or more of these lists is a great way to keep yourself occupied as you wait out the storm at home. If there is a chance you will lose power, download these lists to your tablet or phone. This way, you can access them easily. Pick a language of your choice and start learning today!
