Now, that I’ve gotten your attention, it’s the first day of winter, so how about starting the official season by learning some winter related vocabulary in one of 12 Nordic languages:
- Danish
- Elfdalian
- Faroese
- Icelandic
- Inari Sami
- Lule Sami
- North Sami
- Norwegian
- Pite Sami
- Skolt Sami
- Southern Sami
- Swedish
While there is some core vocabulary available throughout all the posted languages, there has been a bit customization done for each individual language, so that words not used in the target language or words that are mostly exclusive to the target language (but not necessarily common in English or other languages) are included to keep the vocabulary lists relevant and authentic.
Also, starting with today’s lists, I am including links in the downloadable PDFs that will take you to pronunciations of each word by native speakers on forvo.com, a super helpful site for hearing various words and phrases pronounced by various native speakers. However, not every word or phrase in today’s lists has a pronunciation available, but as new pronunciations are uploaded in Forvo by native speakers, I will be updating these lists to include the latest pronunciations.
Now, if you still want that snowball fight, I’m always available – when the snow actually falls in my area 😅. But first download at least one of these winter themed lists so I can quiz you as I throw snowballs at you faster than you can say ‘vinter’ 😂. Oh, and look out for the ones with ice inside 👹 (I never said I’d play nice).
