It is the most critically endangered living Sami language.

  • As of 2010, only two speakers of the language remain – both elderly women.
  • Therefore, it is classified as a moribund language.

Like other Sami languages, it belongs to the Uralic language family.

  • It is part of the Eastern Sami group of languages.
  • It is the easternmost of all the Sami languages.

It has no standard writing system or educational materials, which makes preservation of the language much more difficult than for other living Sami languages.

Soviet collectivisation, which banned the use of the language in schools and homes in order to promote Russian, led to the rapid decline in number of speakers of the language.
