Enets belongs to the Uralic language branch.
- More specifically, Enets belongs to the Samoyedic group of languages.
- It is closely related to Nenets, another Samoyedic language.
There are two distinct dialects – Forest Enets and Tundra Enets.
- Some resources, such as Ethnologue, classify them as separate languages.
- There are slightly more speakers of Tundra Enets.
There are approximately 40 speakers of Enets.
- Most are middle-aged or older.
- All speakers also use Russian as a second language.
Enets uses Cyrillic script.
