Spotlight on Minority Languages – Enets

Enets belongs to the Uralic language branch.

  • More specifically, Enets belongs to the Samoyedic group of languages.
  • It is closely related to Nenets, another Samoyedic language.

There are two distinct dialects – Forest Enets and Tundra Enets.

  • Some resources, such as Ethnologue, classify them as separate languages.
  • There are slightly more speakers of Tundra Enets.

There are approximately 40 speakers of Enets.

  • Most are middle-aged or older.
  • All speakers also use Russian as a second language.

 Enets uses Cyrillic script.
