The five most difficult languages I have tried to learn

1. Korean – been studying since 2011 and yet progress is still hard to come by. In order to teach the good news of the bible to others, I still persist in trying to learn the language. In the meantime, a good free resource to pick up some vocabulary can be found on YouTube. The user ‘sweetandtasty’ makes some pretty good short videos as part of her KWOW (Korean Word of the Week) series.

2. Japanese – I have had a desire to learn this language since childhood, but this language requires great discipline and effort. I plan to make a dedicated effort this fall to really learn the language.

3. Chinese – As someone who relies more on visual than audio clues, this language presents an especially difficult challenge. I still don’t understand how Chinese students manage to learn all those characters by heart in school ;). In the meantime, Get Started in Chinese by Teach Yourself is a good starting point for absolute beginners.

4. Arabic – surprisingly, the hardest part isn’t get used to reading and writing from left to right. I just wish that all books in Arabic would use short vowels. Relying on memory hasn’t worked out so well for me, at least for now ;).

5. Finnish – I’ve taken a break from learning this language until I find a book that can really help me. I was using Teach Yourself Finnish. If anyone has any recommendations, feel free to let me know :).
